Your day begins with hotel pick-up in Puerto Villamil and transportation to El Cura station. From there, hike through the highlands to the rim of Sierra Negra, one of the most active volcanoes in the Galápagos and home to a spectacular 10 km-wide caldera.
Continue toward Volcán Chico across recent lava fields, lava tunnels, colorful mineral formations and fumaroles. This is a fully land-based hiking experience, ideal for travelers who want an active day immersed in Isabela’s volcanic geology.

Your hike at a glance
Hotel pick-up in Puerto Villamil
Morning pick-up from your hotel and transfer through Isabela’s highlands to El Cura station, the starting point of the hike.
Sierra Negra caldera
Hike for approximately 50 minutes to the main viewpoint and take in the scale of the 10 km caldera while your naturalist guide explains the island’s volcanic history.
Volcán Chico
Continue along the crater rim and across recent lava fields to discover lava tunnels, colorful mineral formations, small craters and active fumaroles.
Return to Puerto Villamil
Walk back to El Cura station and transfer to your hotel in Puerto Villamil, arriving in the early afternoon.
